Middle East Veterinary Cooperation
During recent years, Egypt, Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority have
jointly initiated a number of animal health activities in a regional context.
The implementation of various co-operative animal health projects should improve
the control of animal diseases, zoonoses and the quality and safety of animal
products.
The Regional Oversight Committee (ROC) is the administrative
entity for regional co-operation in the field of animal health and veterinary
public health. The ROC is made up of the Directors of the Veterinary Services of
Egypt, Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority.
The regional animal health activities are supported by donors within the framework
of the peace process. The main donors involved are the
European Commission (EC) and the
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
The EC provides financial support to the Regional Animal Health Co-operation
Programme for the Middle East, for planning and subsequent execution for regional
disease control of Foot and Mouth Disease and Rabies. Additional aspects of the
projects focus on the development of human resources and regional communication.
One EC-supported activity is the Regional Veterinary
Information System Project (RVISP), electronically linking senior officials
and major institutions in the region. This MOVE-IN website is a component of the
project. Administrative support is provided by RDP
Livestock Services BV of the Netherlands.
USAID provides financial support to MERC,
the Middle East Regional Co-operation Program, in particular to the projects:
In a wider regional context, FAO through Radiscon
assists the countries with the development of an animal disease surveillance and
control network.
The maintenance of this website is co-ordinated by RDP Livestock Services.
