Regional Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD)

Context:
FMD represents a major health problem to livestock in the region.
FMD causes economic losses and seriously affects international trade in animals and animal products.

Objective:
To reduce economic losses by improving FMD control measures

Scope:
National, bilateral and trilateral activities are ongoing. However, coordination of control measures and efforts is necessary and must be encouraged.

Status:
Despite ongoing control efforts by the national parties, frequent outbreaks of FMD still occur, causing major economic losses.

Tasks:
Epidemiological investigation and applied research (disease dynamics)
Improved vaccine: wider spectrum and long duration of immunity (e.g. oil-adjuvant and multivalent vaccines)
Coordinated vaccination campaigns

Activities:
The First FMD Regional Workshop, Kibbutz Shfayim, Israel, 18-21 December 1997
